Why Work With A Ghostwriting Agency as Opposed to Just a Ghostwriter?

Need a book written? Just hire a writer, right? Not so fast. In this newsletter, ghostwriter-turned-agent, Bryan Basamanowicz, unpacks 5 key value-adds that great ghostwriting agencies deliver.

Value-Add #1: The Accountable and Vetted Human Infrastructure

So much more goes into creating a great book than just the writing. I hate to in any way discount the power of superbly crafted 60,000-word manuscript. I’ve written several. It’s hard work to do it well. ButI need to be honest. A great, and I mean great, manuscript is table stakes. Don’t get me wrong, you need it! You must have it to play, but there’s a whole other downstream production and launch effort that needs to function properly if you want your book to break through the noise, reach an audience, and build your authority.

Drawing from my days as a ghostwriter—interfacing with authors and editors and supplying the best dang words I could possibly muster—it was a rude awakening for me to realize that a strong manuscript alone couldn’t force the success of a book. As bookmakers, our product is high risk. If execution isn’t flawless from the top-down, there’s a strong probability that our return on investment won’t be satisfying. The secret sauce, it turns out, is deeply team-centric. It requires the right combination of production and marketing talents, everything from graphic and interior design, cover design, beta readers, proofreaders, marketing consultants, and others, all of it unified by a driving force that believes in the value of the work being created. A good agency is a curator of finely tuned, expertly deployed collaborative energy.

As an aside, I can recount the many meetings with marketers and copy writers ahead of new book launches. These are boardroom brain-breaking sessions. Some of them are extremely, extremely specific, such as the meetings where everyone tries to come together on a positively, absolutely, most perfect subtitle for an upcoming release. Must speak to the reader’s pain points, must have the right keywords, can’t be too long, can’t be too short, gotta be cool. No way could I have done this on my own, and, similarly, the team couldn’t have done it without me. Teamwork makes the dream work, and the dream was to create bestselling titles, which we did.

Value-Add #2: Talent Acquisition and Deployment

Hiring a reputable ghostwriting agency to produce your book is the most efficient way to generate a short list of well-vetted writers who area good fit for your genre, voice, and budget.

I’ve noticed a trend; the quality of a ghostwriter’s online footprint doesn’t correlate with the quality of their craft. If you have any doubt, take a look at this amusing train wreck of a website from A-list writer, David Rensin, the ghost behind the bestsellers credited to ChrisRock, Gary Shandling, Tim Allen (the list goes on). Meanwhile, ghostwriting legend, JD Moehringer maintains no personal website whatsoever, yet he’s the type to have a years’-long backlog of clients in waiting and a price point in the high six figures.

A good ghost would prefer to spend their time drafting and revising, not running down new business. Most, I find, are quite content to leave sales and marketing in the hands of trusted, writer-friendly agents. That’s why hundreds of high-quality, reliable, craft-focused ghostwriters lean on agents as a source for new work. These are great talents and great people, and without agents, you’d never know they exist.

Bottom line: There’s a very good chance you land a better writer—as well as a stronger, more coherent all-around team (see Value-Add #1)—if you choose to work with an agent.

Value-Add #3: A Strong Boost to Networking Capital

From writers, to editors, to publishers and marketing professionals, you should expect your agency to share and accumulate networking capital on behalf of you and your book. Your writer is going to live deep inside the idea space of your book, and that’s where you want them. Their time is spent interviewing you and refining your voice and message. Your agent, however, is a surface-level creature, who skims the face of the sea, accumulating knowledge of publishing industry trends, key players and markets, the latest implications of AI, secondary production and marketing personnel, and all the other facets of a successful book launch. For example, your agent may be able to tell you which sub-genres of the CEO/Founder Business Book are in most high demand. They may know the precise format that a key literary agent prefers when receiving proposals or which hybrid publisher offers a natural partnership for the book you’re creating.

Of course you could accumulate all this knowledge on your own, gradually over time, but why work your way up from the bottom when there are shoulders to stand on?

Interesting side fact, some ghostwriting agencies aren’t even public-facing but are solely intended to serve publishers in need of writing talent: see 2M communications Ltd.

Value-Add #4: Sidestepping the Noise and Pitfalls of Hiring a Ghostwriter
Ghostwriting scams have been around long before AI made them ever more scalable. It’s easy to waste time or worse, be defrauded, when searching online for the perfect ghostwriter for your book.

An agency sources from a vetted pool of writers and should only introduce you to writers that are exceptionally well suited for your project. Also, the vetting of an agency shouldn’t be underestimated. As agents we have a built-in interest in working with writers who are talented, professional, and have a track record of pleasing clients and producing great work. If things are going smoothly for you in your writing collaboration, then they’re likely also going smoothly for us—a beneficial, prosperous alignment of interests powers your book forward. Let’s ride it out!

But let’s say that things go sideways.Always a possibility, right? I remember working on one project that I shall not name here that was on a highly technical topic with a very exacting author. It required no fewer than four writers, ultimately, to complete the job. But complete the job we did, and what came of it? A damn good book.

In the event things don’t workout with your writer, a pro ghostwriting agency will have your back and work with you as you transition into a new ghostwriting relationship.

Value-Add #5: It’s Not as Expensive As You Might Think

Ok, this is where the cost-conscious consumer perks up: Affordable ghostwriting agencies are a thing. As noted above, writers want to write and agents want to market. Marketing has cost: money and time. Writers understand this and are typically willing to work within the agent and clients’ budgets in exchange for the ongoing opportunities for new work that the agency provides. The agency’s project management support adds another layer of value for the writer. A good agency drives projects forward, unsticks them when they get stuck, ensures deadlines are met, and takes ownership of timely payments to writers alongside quality deliverables to clients. As our lord and savior Donald Trump would say, are you tired of winning yet?

These value-adds accelerate turn-around time, lessen friction, and allow writers to complete projects at a lower overall cost than would have been possible without agency support.

Therefore, an effective ghostwriting agency can and should be an affordable ghostwriting agency.

Bottom line, if you hire a reputable agency, one that cares about the quality of your book and your publishing prospects, expect to pay a little more than what you’d pay by hiring a ghostwriter directly. But you should also expect that your total value on the dollar will be higher.

Gotham Ghostwriting: Nearly 20 years in business, Gotham’s network of writers is broad yet selective. They work across all genres, fitting writer to author. As reads their motto: If you can dream it, we can write it.

KevinAnderson & Associates: Larger, higher-end, white-glove ghostwriting service that provides professional support for all aspects of the writing and publishing process, including editing, coaching, and writing retreats.

Scribe Media: Everyone loves a comeback story. In 2023, Scribe Media was the source of high-pitched publishing drama when it was announced that writers were going to be left unpaid and projects unfinished due to a bankruptcy filing. Since then, the company has resurrected itself in the business/authority-building space.

In conclusion: Consider it a fortunate event when you source an agency you feel you can trust. Odds are the enhanced collaboration will result in greater value returned on your dollar and a superior end product.
